Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Gamescom Demo Returns to Greece, Feb. 12 2027 Launch Confirmed

Four bronze swords drop from the ceiling of St. Francis’ Folly, and a room every returning Tomb Raider fan can sketch from memory somehow plays like something new. That’s the pitch Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog put in front of press behind closed doors at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, a 30-minute, hands-off look at Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis.

Behind closed doors, press saw a demo of the reimagined puzzles of Greece, showing off new mechanics and systems, according to a recap on the official Tomb Raider site. Outlets that had already spent time with the game’s Peru section at Summer Game Fest in July got their first look at a second location, and the reaction split fast between excitement and a shrug.

People are already trading first impressions from the demo footage online, arguing over whether the puzzle work looks fresh or just familiar:

With a presentation given by Crystal Dynamics’ Jeff Adams, the Experience Director, and Flying Wild Hog’s Michał Kuk, the Creative Director, press got the chance to see the developers demo their take on the Swords of Damocles. The room is one of the most recognisable in the 1996 original, and the studios chose it deliberately to show players what’s changed and what hasn’t.

It showed puzzle-solving elements, and the developers stressed that players wouldn’t need the new scanner just to solve puzzles; instead, they could use it for a bigger challenge and to learn lore and history about the places Lara enters. That’s a smart hedge against the scanner-vision fatigue that’s dogged action-adventure games for a decade.

Asked how open the platforming would be in the finished build, Kuk laid out the studio’s priorities directly. “Platforming is number one for Tomb Raider, and we’ve designed the game around it. But that’s just one pillar; the second is puzzles and then combat,” Creative Director Michał Kuk, from Flying Wild Hog said.

Not everyone walked away convinced there was much new to report. Having already gone hands-on with the title at Summer Game Fest, the demo didn’t really highlight anything new in terms of gameplay, one preview noted, and a separate outlet flagged that at the time of writing, it’s been nine months since Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis was revealed, and we’ve only seen Peru, so it was overdue to see a new area. Nine months for a second location is a slow drip for a game less than six months from launch.

Our view: the demo itself looked sharp, but a 30-minute hands-off slot with one new environment isn’t enough to settle whether the extra systems earn their keep. The biggest question is whether all of the additional systems surrounding that foundation such as crafting, upgrades, scanners and accessibility features will strengthen the experience or simply make classic Tomb Raider busier than it needs to be.

The demo arrives against a rougher production backdrop than the trailer cuts let on. Between March 2025 and March 2026, Crystal Dynamics underwent four waves of layoffs, and following the fourth round the studio reiterated that they remained “fully committed to the future development of our already announced Tomb Raider titles.”

Embracer CEO Phil Rogers confirmed that Amazon Game Studios scaling back its video game development ambitions throughout 2025 impacted the development of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Wikipedia’s entry on the game also notes that generative AI was used in the development of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a detail Amazon and Crystal Dynamics haven’t detailed publicly.

None of that shows up on screen in a controlled Gamescom demo. It’s still context worth holding onto when a preview reads as polished but thin on genuinely new material.

Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics set Feb. 12, 2027 for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a ground-up remake of the 1996 original, T-rex fight included. It ships on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X S, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2.
