Story
Deep in a Central American jungle lies an ancient temple concealing the Mirror of Smoke, an artefact of tremendous power. For two thousand years, the Mayan warrior spirit Totec has stood vigil over the mirror, bound by duty to prevent it from ever being used to release Xolotl, a god of darkness imprisoned within.
When a group of ruthless treasure hunters storm the temple and claim the mirror, Xolotl is freed. Totec, his immortality now at risk as long as the god roams free, finds an unlikely ally in Lara Croft, who had been travelling with the mercenaries. Together, they must chase down Xolotl, recover the Mirror of Smoke, and return it to the temple before Totec loses his immortality forever.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light marked a significant departure from the main Tomb Raider series. Rather than the traditional third-person over-the-shoulder perspective, the game adopted a fixed isometric top-down viewpoint. The focus shifted towards faster combat, environmental puzzles, and a cooperative gameplay system in which both characters have distinct abilities. Lara uses her grappling hook as a tightrope for Totec to walk across, while Totec can throw his spear into walls to create climbing holds for Lara. The game supports both single-player and two-player cooperative modes, with the cooperative puzzles designed so that each character’s unique tools are essential to progress.
This was the first game released under the new Lara Croft spin-off label, marking a broader effort to explore different genres and gameplay styles within the franchise.
