Plot
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is a 2001 action-adventure film directed by Simon West and starring Angelina Jolie as the iconic archaeologist Lara Croft. Based on the video game series by Core Design, the film was produced by Paramount Pictures and became one of the most successful video game adaptations of its time.
The story begins when Lara discovers a mysterious ticking clock hidden inside Croft Manor — a clock that has no hands. Guided by a letter from her late father, Lord Richard Croft, she learns of the Illuminati’s plan to retrieve the All-Seeing Eye, an ancient artefact capable of controlling time itself. The two pieces of the device are hidden in ancient temples scattered across the globe.
Lara must race against the Illuminati, led by the cunning Manfred Powell, to recover both halves of the Eye before a rare planetary alignment amplifies the artefact’s power. Along the way she encounters ex-lover Alex West and must confront painful memories of her father’s mysterious disappearance.
The film was shot on location in Cambodia (Angkor Wat), Venice, and Iceland, bringing a globe-trotting grandeur to Lara’s world. Jolie’s committed physical performance and the film’s kinetic action sequences made it a box-office success, grossing over $274 million worldwide.
