Plot

Tomb Raider is a 2018 reboot of the film franchise, directed by Roar Uthaug and starring Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander as a young, inexperienced Lara Croft. The film draws heavy inspiration from the 2013 video game of the same name, reimagining Lara’s origin story for a new generation.

Seven years after the mysterious disappearance of her father, Lord Richard Croft, a twenty-one-year-old Lara is eking out a living as a bicycle courier in London, refusing to accept her father’s inheritance or the possibility that he is truly gone. A cryptic message left by her father leads her to his secret research on Himiko, the legendary “Death Queen” of Yamatai — an ancient island somewhere in the Devil’s Sea off the coast of Japan.

Lara sets sail with Hong Kong boat captain Lu Ren to find the island, only to be captured by the forces of Mathias Vogel, a ruthless operative working for the shadowy organisation Trinity. What follows is a desperate struggle for survival as Lara is forced to confront not only Vogel and his mercenaries, but the ancient and deadly secrets that her father died trying to protect.

The film earned praise for Vikander’s grounded, physical performance and its more grounded take on the character. It grossed over $274 million worldwide and a sequel was planned, though it has since stalled in development.
