Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Dev Says the Title Will Respect the 1996 Original and 2007 Remake While Also Making Something Unique

Amazon Game Studios and Crystal Dynamics are working on Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of Lara Croft’s defining 1996 debut adventure. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will launch Feb. 12, 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure reimagining of the iconic 1996 debut title. In Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, players will step into the boots of Lara Croft as she embarks on a treacherous globe-trotting quest to discover the lost secrets of Atlantis, with jaw-dropping visuals, modernized gameplay, and new surprises that honor the spirit of the original game. Immersive environments, familiar puzzles redefined with new mechanics, and unforgettable moments - like the epic battle against the T-Rex - are transformed as cinematic gameplay encounters on a grand scale. This is the legendary adventure fans remember, reimagined in ways that weren’t possible before, and with new surprises.

In a chat with Games Industry, Raul Siqueira, game director at Crystal Dynamics, revealed that the team made sure to play through the original 1996 version of Tomb Raider as well as the 2007 remake in order to see what they wanted to keep, what needed to be changed, and where they could carve out their own path as well. While Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will be its own adventure and a unique retelling of the original game, it will still make sure to pay respects to both the 1996 and 2007 titles.
