Yesterday brought us the announcement that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of the 1996 genre-defining game, was getting a Switch 2 release day-and-date with other platforms, Feb. 12th, 2027. Today brings us another important tidbit of news, and it comes from the development side of things.
After yesterday’s trailer, Tomb Raider fans noticed something on the game’s Steam listing. In the deluge of details was a mention that “AI-assisted tools were used during development to support some early exploration and temporary development content.” Furthermore, the listing states “any AI-assisted assets were either replaced or refined by humans in order to maintain the creative and artistic vision of the development team.”
Not surprisingly, there were quite a few fans that were bummed out to see this notice. Following the blowback, developer Crystal Dynamics shared the following statement with Eurogamer:
“At Crystal Dynamics, we leverage AI tools to help our teams iterate on ideas faster and more efficiently, while ensuring that all finished content in the final product is human-crafted. Our goal is to empower the creativity and flexibility of our developers to deliver the highest-quality experiences for players everywhere.”
